When you look at Destin's condos, businesses, walkways and people enjoying the Florida climate, it might be hard to believe that this was once a simple 1850s fishing village and for decades did not experience much growth at all. This changed in the 1980s, when the popularity of Destin real estate soared, due to increased interest from people looking for vacation homes. Today, the median price for all Destin homes for sale hovers around the $500K mark, a far cry from the values of the time when Captain Leonard Destin settled in the area and gave the city its name.
Captain Destin gave the community more than his name; he was one of the pioneering fishermen who recognized the opportunities for food and sport that Destin provided. Today, Destin is known as the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village" and for the many fishermen who flock to its marinas, it's certainly true. According to the city's official website, "the largest and most elaborately equipped fishing fleet in the State of Florida docks at the Destin Harbor."
In addition to the fishing and activities supported by miles of "sugar" sand beaches, Destin is a prime destination for golfers. The Regatta Bay Golf Course is one of the most famous of these. Designed by Robert C. Walker, this course has been voted NW Florida's number one golf course by Florida Golf News readers multiple times. Clubs of note include the Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort, with multiple courses, the Kelly Plantation Golf Club, and the Indian Bayou Golf & Country Club. Destin golf homes are very popular, with some commanding some of the highest values in the area.
